Year 6 numbers reach ten million. The place-value rule never changes — each place is ten times the one to its right — so seven-digit numbers are read, compared and rounded just like smaller ones.
What your child will learn
- Say the value of each digit in a number up to 10,000,000
- Find 10,000 or 100,000 more or less than a number
- Compare and order seven-digit numbers
- Round to the nearest 10,000 or 100,000
Millions, thousands, ones
Read 4,372,815 in three groups: 4 million, 372 thousand, 815. To round to the nearest 100,000, look at the ten-thousands digit: 7 is 5 or more, so 4,372,815 rounds up to 4,400,000.
