Year 5 numbers stretch to a million. Children read five- and six-digit numbers, know what every digit is worth and round them to make sensible estimates.
What your child will learn
- Say the value of each digit in a number up to 1,000,000
- Find 1,000 or 10,000 more or less than a number
- Compare and order large numbers
- Round to the nearest 1,000 or 10,000
Read it in threes
Large numbers are easier in groups of three digits. 472,815 is “four hundred and seventy-two thousand, eight hundred and fifteen”: read the first group, say “thousand”, then read the second. To compare two numbers, start at the left and stop at the first digit that differs.
