    Division Castle

    Year 5 Division & Remainders

Divide by 10 and 100, divide bigger numbers by a single digit, and work out what is left over as a remainder.

    • Ages 9–11
    • 3 quests
    • Beginner → Getting stronger → Challenge

Not every division works out exactly. Year 5 children divide bigger numbers by one digit and learn what to do with the amount left over — the remainder.

    What your child will learn

    • Divide by 10 and 100
    • Divide a two- or three-digit number by a single digit
    • Give a remainder when a number does not divide exactly

    What is left over?

47 ÷ 6: six 7s are 42, which is as close as we can get without going over. 47 − 42 leaves 5, so the answer is 7 remainder 5. The remainder is always smaller than the number you are dividing by.

    Example questions

Here are a few questions like the ones in the first quest. Can you solve them?

    1. 1. What is 144 ÷ 8?

      • 28
      • 20
      • 18
      • 8
      Show answer

      Answer: 18. Check with multiplication: 8 × 18 = 144, so 144 ÷ 8 = 18.

    2. 2. What is 85 ÷ 5?

      • 27
      • 17
      • 7
      • 20
      Show answer

      Answer: 17. Check with multiplication: 5 × 17 = 85, so 85 ÷ 5 = 17.

    3. 3. What is 170 ÷ 10?

      • 15
      • 1700
      • 170
      • 17
      Show answer

      Answer: 17. Dividing by 10 moves every digit 1 place to the right. 170 ÷ 10 = 17.

    Tips for grown-ups

    • Share real things that don’t divide exactly: 23 sweets among 4 people.
    • Check with multiplication: 6 × 7 + 5 should give 47.
