Division is multiplication backwards. Every times-table fact gives two division facts for free: if 7 × 8 = 56, then 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
What your child will learn
- Recall division facts for the 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables
- Use a multiplication fact to work out a division
- Find a missing number in a division
- Solve sharing and grouping stories
Fact families
Three numbers such as 6, 9 and 54 make a fact family: 6 × 9 = 54, 9 × 6 = 54, 54 ÷ 6 = 9 and 54 ÷ 9 = 6. To divide, ask “what times 6 makes 54?”
Example questions
Here are a few questions like the ones in the first quest. Can you solve them?
1. True or false? 14 ÷ 7 = 2
Show answer
Answer: True. 14 ÷ 7 = 2, because 7 × 2 = 14.
2. What is 49 ÷ 7?
- 6
- 9
- 8
- 7
Show answer
Answer: 7. 49 ÷ 7 = 7, because 7 × 7 = 49.
3. True or false? 63 ÷ 7 = 9
Show answer
Answer: True. 63 ÷ 7 = 9, because 7 × 9 = 63.
Tips for grown-ups
- Write a fact family triangle with the biggest number at the top.
- Share real things, like 42 cards between 6 players.
