Knowing the order of the alphabet helps children find words in a dictionary, names in a list and books on a shelf. Once the letter order is secure, they can put whole words into alphabetical order.

From letters to words
Alphabet Avenue starts with single letters — what comes after G? — then moves to words. To put words in order, look at the first letter. If two words start with the same letter, like “bag” and “bed”, look at the second letter instead.
