Kata sendi nama are prepositions: small words placed before a noun to show place, direction, time or who receives something. The six most useful are di (at, in), ke (to a place), dari (from a place or time), daripada (from a person, made from, than), kepada (to a person) and pada (at a time, with a person).
What your child will learn
- Use di for where something is and ke for where it is going
- Tell dari from daripada
- Use kepada for people and pada for times
Place or person?
For places, use di, ke and dari: “di sekolah”, “ke sekolah”, “dari sekolah”. For people, use kepada and daripada: “kepada ibu”, “daripada ibu”.
Daripada has two more jobs: what something is made from (“daripada kayu”) and comparing (“lebih tinggi daripada saya”). Pada is used with times: “pada pukul lapan”, “pada hari Isnin”.
