Year 6 children find any percentage of an amount by building it from 10%, and use percentages the way shops do — to work out a sale price.

Build it from 10%
To find 30% of 80, find 10% first (8), then multiply by 3 to get 24. For a discount, take the percentage off: a 60-coin game at 25% off costs 60 − 15 = 45 coins.
