    Chart Cove

    Year 1 Picture Charts

Read a picture chart: count the pictures in a row, find the most and the fewest, and work out how many more.

    • Ages 5–7
    • 3 quests
    • Beginner → Getting stronger → Challenge

A picture chart turns a jumble of information into rows that are easy to compare. Year 1 children count the pictures in each row and use the chart to answer questions.

    What your child will learn

    • Read a picture chart where each picture stands for one
    • Find the row with the most and the row with the fewest
    • Work out how many more one row has than another

    Longest row, most things

Because every picture is the same size, the longest row has the most. To find “how many more”, count both rows and take the smaller number from the bigger one — or line the rows up and count the extra pictures.

    Example questions

Here are a few questions like the ones in the first quest. Can you solve them?

    1. 1. What number does the chart show for Oranges?

    Tips for grown-ups

    • Make a picture chart of the fruit in your kitchen.
    • Tally the colours of cars passing by, then draw a chart.
    • Ask questions about any chart you see: which has the most? How many altogether?
