Penanda wacana are the linking phrases that hold a piece of writing together. Each one signals how the next sentence relates to the last: adding (selain itu, di samping itu), ordering (pertama, kemudian, akhirnya), contrasting (namun begitu, sebaliknya), showing a result (oleh itu, akibatnya), giving an example (contohnya, misalnya) or concluding (kesimpulannya).

Signposts for the reader
Ask how the new sentence connects. More of the same? Selain itu. The opposite? Namun begitu or sebaliknya. A consequence? Oleh itu or akibatnya. An illustration? Contohnya.
In an essay, each new point can open with a different marker — pertama, selain itu, di samping itu, akhir sekali — and the closing paragraph with kesimpulannya. A comma always follows the marker.
