Some mistakes are so common in everyday Malay that they sound right. This world trains the ear to catch them: wrong word order (goreng pisang), ramai used for things, doubled plurals (mereka-mereka), redundant pairs (demi untuk, sejak dari), and over-built verbs (memperolehi, memperbesarkan).
What your child will learn
- Put the main word first and its describer second
- Use ramai for people and banyak for animals and things
- Remove redundant words
- Spell commonly misspelled words
Four habits to fix
Word order: the thing comes first, then what describes it — pisang goreng, sos cili, Restoran Maju. People versus things: ramai orang, but banyak kucing and banyak buku.
Redundancy: say “demi negara” or “untuk negara”, not “demi untuk negara”; “sejak pagi”, not “sejak dari pagi”; “dalam kalangan”, not “di kalangan”; “selain itu”, not “selain daripada itu”. Verbs: memperoleh and memperbesar need no extra ending. And baharu means “new”, while baru means “just now”.
