Malay has two kata pemeri, linking words rather like “is”: ialah and adalah. Ialah shows that two things are the same and is followed by a noun phrase: “Kuala Lumpur ialah ibu negara Malaysia.” Adalah describes and is followed by an adjective phrase or a preposition phrase: “Berita itu adalah benar.” “Hadiah ini adalah untuk ibu.”
What your child will learn
- Use ialah before a noun phrase
- Use adalah before an adjective or preposition phrase
- Never put a kata pemeri before a verb
- Avoid “adalah merupakan”
Look at what follows
If the words after the gap name a person or thing (guru besar, haiwan liar, seorang jurutera), use ialah. If they describe (benar, muktamad) or start with a preposition (untuk, daripada, di), use adalah.
Neither word may stand before a verb: “Dia adalah pergi ke sekolah” is wrong. And “adalah merupakan” doubles up — use one or the other.
