The syair is a traditional Malay poem used to tell stories and give advice. Each verse has four lines that all end in the same sound (a-a-a-a), and every line carries the message — there is no pembayang as in a pantun. The sajak is modern poetry: free in length and rhyme.

Three kinds of verse
Pantun: four lines, a-b-a-b, two lines of pembayang and two of maksud. Syair: four lines, a-a-a-a, all maksud, verse after verse telling one story. Sajak: no fixed pattern at all.
A sajak gets its music from repeated words and from images. “Sungai itu menyanyi riang” gives a river a human action — a device called personifikasi.
