Malay verbs never change form for tense. Instead a kata bantu, a helper word, stands before the verb. Kata bantu aspek show time: sudah and telah (done), sedang and masih (still going on), akan (will), belum (not yet), pernah (ever, once). Kata bantu ragam show attitude: hendak and mahu (want), mesti and harus (must, should), boleh and dapat (can).
What your child will learn
- Use helper words to show past, present and future
- Use mesti, harus, boleh and hendak
- Put the time helper before the mood helper
Time first, then mood
“Saya sudah makan” (I have eaten), “Saya sedang makan” (I am eating), “Saya akan makan” (I will eat), “Saya belum makan” (I have not eaten yet).
When two helpers are used together, the time word comes first: “belum boleh berjalan” (cannot walk yet), “sudah hendak pulang” (already about to go home).
